Notes & Reviews:

A spirited interpretation and authentic colours of sound are the unmistakable hallmarks of the recording of Buxtehude's cantata cycle 'Membra Jesu Nostri', performed by the Knabenchor Hannover. The use of period instruments alongside the boys' choir makes this an historically-informed performance. This is presently the only available recording of this work performed by a boys' choir.

There are moments of exquisite beauty. Listen to the sample provided, the first five minutes of Ad Manus where, at just under a minute in, the gossamer lines of two sopranos cross in an exquisitely suspended dissonance that pleads for resolution. It's ravishing! ... read more ...

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Membra Jesu Nostri has become the most recorded of Dietrich Buxtehude's works. It is a cycle of seven Latin cantatas that form a series of meditations on the Passion of Christ, each addressed to a specific part of the body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart, and face. Each cantata begins with an instrumental sonata followed by a "concerto" for five voices setting a brief passage from the Vulgate. (The concertos for cantatas 5 and 6 are for three voices.) The heart of each cantata is a group of three "arias" for one to three voices setting stanzas from the devotional poem Salve Mundi Salutare by Arnulf of Louvain (d 1250). This is a very fine performance. The technical standard is first-rate. Dignity and serenity are the prevailing characteristics of the reading, with a touching poignancy that seems just beneath the surface. The soloists are outstanding early-music singers who work well as a team. Cantatas 5 and 6 (in three parts) are sung by solo voices only. The period strings have a warm and elegant sound, and this applies as much to the viol consort in Cantata 6 as to the violins in the other cantatas. Readers who are collecting recordings of Membra Jesu Nostri will certainly want to add this to their collections even if they feel, as I do, that the work is better suited to performance by a small ensemble than by a full chorus, as here. The Hanover Boys Choir was founded in 1950 by Heinz Hennig, who directed it until 2001, when he was succeeded by his student J÷rg Breiding, the conductor on this recording.
