Notes & Reviews:

Dedicated to his friend and pupil Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's expansive Archduke Trio is his greatest work in the genre, though increasing deafness meant it also signaled his final appearances as a performer. The cheerful Piano Trio in E flat major is an earlier work, though only discovered amongst the composer's papers after his death, and the Kakadu Variations is another good humored work based on a popular song of the day. With the American Record Guide "impressed with every recording", Volumes 1 (8.557723), 2 (8.557724), 3 (8.570255) and 4 (8.570943) are also available.

This is the fifth volume in the Xyrion Trio's complete Beethoven cycle. The Kakadu Variations is a good-humored, imaginative work. The performance is superb, played with assured continuity. Of particular merit is the execution of the mysterious introduction. Expressive markings appear on practically every note, and the players nail all of them without disrupting the overall line. Another high point is Variation 8, where the piano and strings is played up nicely. The Archduke Trio is likewise marvelously delivered. I am particularly taken with the piano, played with an even, balanced touch and chords perfectly voiced even at the softest volume. The Trio in E-flat, WoO 38 is an appealing early work. The performance is again excellent. Very good notes in English.
