Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
In the ten-minute Elegy for Astronauts, composed shortly after the 1986 explosion of the Challenger space shuttle. The composer is conductor and keyboardist in Tale of Issoumbochi (1968), a 19- minute musical story - along the lines of Peter and the Wolf - for narrator, singer, and chamber ensemble. The Japanese folk tale of a tiny boy's fantastic adventures is read by the fine narrator Jonathan McMurtry. The excellent performers are soprano Richelle Triglia, flutist Beth Ross-Buckley, clarinetist Theresa Tunnicliff, cellist Thomas Stauffer, and percussionist Patrick Pfiffner. Western Orpheus is a ballet commissioned for the 1965 opening of the San Diego Civic Theatre. This eight-movement, 26-minute suite is from an expanded 1987 version. San Diego Symphony violinist Nicholas Grant and pianist Ward-Steinman are soloists in this excellent reading by the California Ballet Orchestra, conducted by David Barra. A short Prelude for violin and orchestra leads to Scene 1 (Limbo) - a morose 'Apollo' and a quirky 'Apollo and Dionysus'. I'm happy to hear music by this fine composer.
