Notes & Reviews:

The first eleven Zigeunerlieder, in a well-chosen sequence must be understood as a story, says Brahms. The Zigeunerlieder can be seen as both the vocal counterpart of the Hungarian dances and as the counterpart of the exotic Liebeslieder-Walzer op. 52 and 65. The cycle owes its popularity to the great interest in folk music in the 19th century.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
I suppose we could call this a mixed collection: the complete Opus 104; the Songs for Women's Choir, Horns, and Harp; Quartets, Opus 92; selections from the Op. 112 Quartets, and four Gypsy Songs, plus six more works. This is a fine recording all around. Trinitatis Kantori is an independent concert choir associated with Trinity Church in Copenhagen; they number about 28, judging from the picture in the booklet. These Brahms pieces are brought to life by Per Enevold, who brings wonderful subtlety and finesse to the music. Tempos are all in the normal range. The effect is supported by the text and feels completely natural. They are very fine indeed, as are the pianist and instrumentalists (in the songs with two horns and harp). Heartily recommended.
