Notes & Reviews:
Around 1890, after seeing the success of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavalli decided to write an opera in response, in one act and composed in the verismo style. Leoncavallo claimed that he took the inspiration for Pagliacci from a real-life incident from his childhood.

Murgu's splendid, ringing tenor is just right for Canio. Giossi is a nice Silvio, and his duet with Nedda is performed complete. Paternostro is a good conductor, and the chorus sings enthusiastically.
Personnel: Claudio Otelli, Marzio Giossi, Fiamma Izzo d'Amico, Rein Kolpa, Michael Auer, Geza Ferenc Klucsik, Corneliu Murgu (vocals).
