Stefano Nascimbeni, a musician who was Mantuan by birth and had received a sound education in Northern Italy, became kapellmeister of the Palatine Basilica of Santa Barbara when Gian Giacomo Gastoldi died in 1609. He filled a post that had been aspired to by Claudio Monteverdi himself; both left Mantua in the same period in 1612. The Mass featured here is Paradis del Amours, whose title and theme had probably been inspired by a chanson of which no trace has been found.
