Performer Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Performing these works is the acclaimed Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen, a Brilliant Classics regular who is one of Ten Holt's biggest advocates. The release is an engaging follow - up to his 11CD box set with Ten Holt ('Multiple Piano Works') and the 9CD 'Minimal Piano Collection'.

Positive and life-enhancing. This is thanks to Simeon ten Holt's musical vision, but is also due in no small part to Jeroen van Veen's remarkable and sensitive interpretations. This whole experience can all be yours for just little more than the price of a single full-price release. Well, what's keeping you?

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
Most of the pieces here - including the second, third and fourth Solo Devil's Dance and Eadem sed Aliter (1995) - follow the same basic procedure as Canto, and various cross-references to that seminal work seem to appear from time to time. In spite of that, each of the works has its own musical identity and sonic profile: the third Solo Devil's Dance, for instance, restricts itself to the treble range of the piano. The fascinating Natalon in E is a kind of sonata that somehow reminds me, formally, of Schubert's Moments Musicaux: the five-movement form contrasts different patterns and procedures and thus is quite different from the continuous sound tapestry of the other works on the program. Jeroen van Veen, who is probably the leading performer of minimalist piano music plays, I believe, a Fazioli piano. The performances are thrilling for their virtuosity, tone, and expressive sensitivity. This music is perhaps the most engaging I've heard recently, and it will occupy my attention for some time to come.
