Notes & Reviews:

Gramophone Magazine
Borowicz clearly has the expressive geometry of Panufnik's thinking under his fingers...Borowicz understands perfectly when Panufnik's dual-purpose material needs dramatising and when best to leave well alone.

The Guardian
These rather impressively refined performances under Lukasz Borowicz demonstrate, [2 & 3] are both beautifully crafted, contained pieces that never parade their emotional content too conspicuously.

This disc has encouraged me to explore some other works by Gouvy and it might do the same for you. The performances under Jacques Mercier are strongly characterised and persuasive. Mercier knows this style well having recorded the other three volumes.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
You can understand why Gouvy was such a hit in Leipzig while only gradually making any popular headway in Paris, but there is a good, firm talent at work here and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie are persuasive advocates of his merits.

CPO concludes the original symphonic editions this month with the Gouvy Edition. Gouvy was born in 1819 in Goffontaine (today's Scheidt-Schafbrücke), just outside Saarbrücken. When he died in 1898, he was regarded as a Frenchman in Germany and as a German in France. No other foreign composer's works were performed as frequently in the 1850s in Leipzig as Gouvy's.

Expedition Audio Recommended
This is music of astonishingly high quality to be heard here in absolutely first rate performances! ... It was very difficult selecting a excerpt to feature for this recommendation, because it's all so darn good... please take a few minutes to enjoy the closing Alla breve of Louis Théodore Gouvy's Fantaisie Symphonique, and remember there's about an hour more of great music from Gouvy on this superb cpo release.... ... read more ...
