Notes & Reviews:

This recording is a celebration of the famous Johann Sebastian and ten other lesser-known Bachs, re-imagined for trumpet and piano. Bach specialist Daniel-Ben Pienaar arranged music from a great uncle, close cousins, distant cousins, and five sons, all related to the great J. S. Bach in a unique recital program.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
English trumpeter Jonathan Freeman-Attwood has made five recordings, all consisting of arrangements. The selections (portions of overtures, organ works, keyboard sonatas, chorales, and so forth) are brief; and because all are played by trumpet and piano, they are completely transformed and homogenized. I found the most enjoyment near the end of the program. A 'Rondo Allegretto' from a cello sonata by JS's son Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (1732-95) has a terrifically fast piano part that is played with gusto by Daniel- Ben Pienaar. 'La Joye', from an orchestral suite by JS's second cousin Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1749), will make you smile when arranger Pienaar plays much of the bass part on the piano's very lowest notes. A Sinfonia from the 1779 opera Amadis des Gaules, by Johann Christian Bach (1735-82), is both lively and expressive. And then there is the final work, the wonderful Sarabande from JS's Cello Suite 6. Herbert Fryer added some notes and it's a lovely arrangement. Daniel-Ben Pienaar is a fine arranger and excellent pianist. Jonathan Freeman-Attwood has a pure trumpet tone quality that has warmth sometimes. That style is especially noticeable in the very first selection, JS Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G, S 541. The brilliant organ piece is a good choice for trumpet and piano.
