Wilhelm Furtwängler: Vienna Concerts 1944-1954 / Badura-Skoda, Seefried, Patzak, Fischer-Dieskau [18 CDs]

Notes & Reviews:

After Berlin, Vienna was the music center to which Wilhelm Furtwängler had the closest artistic connections. Under his direction the Vienna Philharmonic made a whole series of radio recordings that have now, for the first time, been carefully edited under the auspices of the Furtwängler specialist Gottfried Kraus and released by Orfeo on 18 CDs.

International Record Review, May 2013
This is a set which will be or urgent interest to Furtwängler collectors and it should be explored by anyone wanting to hear a great conductor at the height of his powers ... Orfeo has given us a Furtwängler set of considerable musical significance ... an engrossing experience.

Great collection of concerts conducted by Furtwangler
Yes, Iím a Furtwangler fan. This man was, in my opinion, a wonderful conductor. And in this 18 disc set it is very apparent that he *always* had something meaningful to say when he was at the podium. This collection features two performances of Bachís St. Matthewís Passion, two performances of Beethovenís Symphony No. 1 (from 1944 and 1952) and three performances of Beethovenís Symphony No. 9 from 1951, 1952, and 1953. Particularly noteworthy is the 1952 performance of Beethovenís Ninth, as well as Brahms Symphony No. 1, Brahmís Haydn Variations, and Mozartís Klavierkonzert KV 365 and KV 482.

The recording quality is very good considering the time in which it was recorded, and the liner notes are informative and give valuable perspective to the musical environment at the time as well as the depth of feeling that the note-writer felt as a performer under Mr. Furtwangler. For those unfamiliar with his work, this should be a wonderful musical discovery. For those that have other collections, there is indeed additional value here. This is a wonderful collection -- highly recommended!
