Notes & Reviews:

Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg and Il Complesso Barocco present a disc of Handel arias and orchestral pieces that span a narrow spectrum from the comparatively unfamiliar to the practically unknown - in fact nine of the twelve arias are premiere recordings, as is the D Major March, HWV 416.

Expedition Audio Recommended
The performances by Alan Curtis, his excellent period instrument ensemble Il Complesso Barocco, and especially Swedish mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg cinch the deal. Ms. Hallenberg's voice has an especially dark and sumptuous tone and she sings with unfailing beauty and musicality. Listeners who have enjoyed recent programs from Cecilia Bartoli, Vivica Genaux and Joyce DiDonato should get to know the art of Ann Hallenberg, and this Naïve CD is a perfect place to begin. ... read more ...

Early Music Today, Autumn 2013
It's a polished set, with stylish playing from Il Complesso Baroccco and lovely singing from Emoke Barath and Karina Gauvin, who's Cleopatra, becomes richer and nuanced aria by aria.

MusicWeb International, 22nd April 2013
Lemieux uses her exciting coloratura with psychological insight and, importantly, accuracy...However, the voice is wonderfully sensual for the love music...Gauvin is all feminine sensuality...As always, though, it is Curtis that holds the whole show together. He approaches this, as with his other Handel recordings, with fresh eyes and ears so as to reawaken us to how effective this opera can be for our own time.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Hallenberg is an established and accomplished Handel singer. She is an ideal interpreter here. Her rich lower range, of virtual contralto coloring, is balanced by agility in the upper one, and she appreciates character and mood. Quite a number of them are beautifully thoughtful and introspective effusions - such as 'Veni, o caro' for Rinaldo, 'Sa perche pena il cor' for Teseo, and 'Faro cosi piu bella' for Admeto. Curtis has also added to these vocal items five very brief orchestral tidbits of obscure origins or purpose. He leads with expertise and understanding an ensemble of 22 players. The recorded sound is clear. This is an important supplement to any good collection of Handel's operas.
