Notes & Reviews:

This disc marks pianist Martin Perry's first recording for Bridge. Perry is much admired as an interpreter of modernist piano repertoire, and has appeared with orchestras from the Boston Pops to the Moscow Philharmonic. Annotator Malcolm MacDonald writes that the three major works on this disc demand extreme virtuosity from the performer, "but the solidity and originality of their musical substance demands understanding, subtlety and the ability to discern lyricism and poetry in sometimes daunting and dissonant contexts." Bartók's rhapsodic op. 20, composed during 1920, might be counted his most esoteric treatment of his research in Hungarian folk music. Rózsa's Sonata is in three movements, and was composed in 1948. It is the composer's most substantial keyboard composition. Elliott Carter's Piano Sonata is generally acknowledged to be his first wholly successful large scale work, composed in two broad and complex movements. Martin Perry's writings can be read at his blog, Con Spirito, www.martinperrypiano.com.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
Martin Perry delivers first-rate performances of three 20th Century piano works. The Improvisations are among Bartok's most colorful translations of Eastern European folk music into concert music, and every detail of the score - every accent, every meticulously notated tempo change - is present in Perry's rendition. Despite such careful preparation, the performance sounds, well, improvisatory, as it should. Good notes by Malcolm MacDonald are a welcome bonus.
