The music is simultaneously calming and challenging, dramatic and inspiring. At the core of the record, Brown employs samples of the Gee's Bend Quilters (artisans and spiritual singers hailing from rural Alabama), building tunes like "Mean World," "I Know I've Been Changed" and "Power Of God" around their voices and message. The latter tune evolves into a beautiful piano meditation by Geri Allen, one of the talented guest artists on this recording. Another guest, Falu, adds East Indian vocals to "I Know I've Been Changed," giving the song a thoughtful, otherworldly aura. In the hands of these artists, Transcendence makes absolute and perfect sense.
