Opera 2013 is a glittering 2-CD collection of operatic highlights and arias featuring great composers and artists who are all celebrating significant anniversaries in 2013.
The first disc features works from composers Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, Benjamin Britten, Andre Gretry and Francis Poulenc who all celebrate multiple anniversaries. Wagner and Verdi, two of opera's greatest composers, celebrate the bicentenary of their births. Highlights from their respective operas such as Tristan und Isolde and Die Walkure are found in the set. 2013 also marks 100th birthday of English composer Benjamin Britten, the 200th anniversary of French composer Andre Gretry's death as well as the 50th anniversary of French composer Francis Poulenc's death.
The second disc presents recordings from some of the greatest voices of today and legendary singers of the past. The set includes the famous recording of Norma's aria, Casta Diva, sung by the iconic Maria Callas. The recording was most recently used in the motion picture The Iron Lady. 2013 marks the 90th anniversary of La Divina's birth. Also found on the disc in Diana Damrau's flawless recording of Der Holle Rache from Mozart's Die Zauberflote. The Queen of the Night has been her most frequently performed role to date. This year is the 10th anniversary of debut in the role.
