Notes & Reviews:

One of the great forgotten figures in the history of music - possibly the best-kept secret of French Romanticism - is undoubtedly Charles-Valentin Alkan. He was admired by Liszt and nicknamed "the Berlioz of the piano" by Hans von Bülow. On this recording, pianist Pascal Amoyel showcases all the composer's many facets. The disc's key work is the Grande Sonate Les quatre ages - a colossal work and a romantic idealization of the form that undoubtedly influenced Liszt. Other works include selected shorter pieces such as the sublime Esquisses.
