Notes & Reviews:

Organist and jungle doctor, theologian and building manager, charity fundraiser and academic: Albert Schweitzer is one of the most fascinating personalities of the 20th century. On the 100th anniversary of the foundation of his hospital at Lambarene, Rondeau Production dedicates a very special Bach recording to this man of the arts, of thought, of faith, and - most importantly - of action.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
This recording is issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding in 1913 of Albert Schweitzer's missionary hospital at LambarTnT, Gabon, in equatorial Africa. The organist on this recording is Ullrich B÷hme, the current organist at St Thomas Church, Leipzig. He is deeply influenced by Schweitzer's writings and example. In the Bach memorial recitals, the theme was always death and new life, and so it is in the present recording. B÷hme draws chorale preludes from the Orgelbnchlein, the Schnbler Chorales, the miscellaneous chorales, and almost inevitably 'Vor deinen Thron'. At the conclusion of the organ program four stanzas of 'Vor deinen Thron' are sung by the Leipzig-based vocal ensemble Calmus. The first stanza is an arrangement for voices of Bach's chorale prelude, turning it into a piece of exquisite vocal chamber music. The others are straightforward chorale harmonizations. As a bonus track there is a recording from October 1936 of Schweitzer himself playing the A-minor Adagio from the Toccata in C (S 564) on the organ of another church in Strasbourg. B÷hme's playing might be described as mainstream. To that extent he may be said to share the spirit of Schweitzer's own interpretations. The organ tone is warm and rich.
