Notes & Reviews:

This recording invites listeners to stroll through Strauss' lieder production. Groups of works from various creative periods are loosely combined. The selection based purely on musical criteria and no other design. Oelze and Schneider's previous album, "Forbidden Songs" featuring exiled Jewish composers, received critical acclaim.

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
Strauss's Four Last Songs have been recorded and reviewed many times by ARG, with orchestral or piano accompaniment. The Solo Musica recording includes the Four Last Songs, along with 20 well-known and lesser-known lieder from various periods of his productivity. The selection is varied and well chosen. The music is quite beautiful and catches the meaning of the underlying poems so well that it's hard to imagine the poems. This recording makes that point very well with exquisite singing and accompaniment. Ms Oelze has a lighter soprano than we normally associate with Strauss. And she performs the songs with an understanding of each poem's meaning. The Four Last Songs are also performed beautifully. What is remarkable about this recording is Mr Schneider's breathtaking playing of Strauss's piano arrangements. He deserves high praise for the beautiful phrasing and sensitivity of his accompaniment and in bringing out musical details that complement and reinforce the singing. This is some of the finest accompaniment I've heard. I've already played this several times to hear how beautifully these songs are performed. The sound is excellent.
