Ensemble Composers

Notes & Reviews:

Britten's works for a cappella choir reveal an overwhelming variety of styles, texts and compositional techniques. The choices made for this recording - major works from different creative phases of his life - reflect this diversity. The inclusion of works by Byrd, Purcell, Elgar and Vaughan Williams also affords an opportunity to trace a line of tradition in English choral music.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The Collegium Vocale is identified in the English cover and notes. Founded in 2005 by conductor Grosch, the ensemble is based in the Franciscan Church in Lucerne. They are first rate. Theirs is a beautifully integrated sound, delicately floating, an aural heavenly dream. Four significant pieces by Britten dominate the program: 'Advance Democracy', 'A Hymn to the Virgin', 'Hymn to St Cecilia', and 'Sacred and Profane'. Three Shakespeare Songs by Vaughan Williams are rendered with exquisite delicacy. Kodaly's 'Ode to Music' is dark and mysterious. Early English choral music is represented by an 'Ave Verum' by William Byrd and 'Hear My Prayer, O Lord' adjusted by Sven-David Sandstr÷m. What beautiful performances of such an attractive program!
