Notes & Reviews:

Presenting Vol.5 in the first complete recording of the 72 cantatas from Telemann's collection Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, published in Hamburg, 1726 - they were the first complete set of cantatas for the liturgical year to appear in print.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
In 1725-26 Telemann published a liturgical cycle of 72 cantatas for solo voice with solo obligato and continuo instruments, titled Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, oder Geistliche Cantaten zum allgemeinen Gebrauche (Harmonious Sacred Service, or Spritual Cantatas for Gerneral Use). About 1731 he published a Continuation (Fortsezung) to the original volume. All these works are in a concise aria-recit-aria format, setting devotional poetry by writers of the day. They were intended to fill the need for pairs of cantatas to be sung directly before and after the sermon for each of the year's church feasts. Like the first volume in the series, this one contains six of the cantatas for high voice. The singer is the Norwegian soprano Mona Julsrud, whose piping voice, pinpoint precision, and stylistic sympathy impressed our reviewer. The instrumentalists are also admirable and, once again, the total production demonstrates the highest artistic standards. If it is ever completed, it will be a true monument in the Telemann discography. Excellent notes.
