Notes & Reviews:

The world's first lullabies were simple songs sung or hummed by parents cradling their infants and rocking them to sleep. After the birth of violinist Rachel Barton Pine's first child in 2011 she could find no existing collection of classical violin lullaby scores or recordings, so she set about gathering sheet music from libraries around the world and recording her own versions with pianist Matthew Hagle. Familiar tunes and new discoveries intertwine in this sweet, timely release celebrating the beauty of new life and parenthood.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
The playing is so musically engaging and the sound is so beautiful that if you play the recording for your children or grandchildren, it would more likely turn them into music lovers or musicians than put them to sleep.

Reviews

Lovely collection of short Violin lullabies
This CD is a collection of lullabies performed by Rachel Barton Pine (violin) and Matthew Hagle (piano). The disc is lovely from start to finish, but particularly attention grabbing are Frolovs Concert Fantasio on Gershwins Summertime, Manuel de Fallas Nana (No. 5 from Siete canciones populares espanolas), Faures Berceuse (Op. 16), Schuberts Wiegenlied (D. 498 this is just *gorgeous*), Durosoirs Berceuse (No. 4, from Cinq Aquarelles), Mikhail Antsevs Berceuse (No. 1, from Four Pieces), Victor Berauds Petite Reine Berceuse (Lullaby for a Little Queen this is sooooo sweet!), and William Grant Stills Mother and Child (No. 2 from Suite for Violin and Piano). The collection closes with Max Regers wonderful Wiegenlied (Cradle Song No.l from Drei Kompositienen, Op. 79d).

Ms. Pine does a marvelous job on the violin, and her performance is warm and refreshing. Matthew Hagle accompanies on piano, and he too has a fine balance with the violin, each combining together to form a delightful whole. This is just fundamentally good music making, and the material is soothing and very special.

While I dont normally go in for collections, this one is worth acquiring. Highly recommended.

Golden Lullabies for Baby Pine
The acclaimed violin superstar Rachel Barton Pine sings her baby to sleep with the most beautiful melodies of the world, wrapped in the golden swaddling clothes of her violin music. This is a collection of international music in an exquisite setting of violin solo with piano accompaniment by Matthew Hagle, who is perfectly attuned to Ms. Pines expression and performance.

Ms. Pine bookends the collection with Wiegenlieder by Brahms and Reger, forming a musical cradle for the worlds new generation. She has selected famous and familiar songs from around the world, every selection showing the artistry and sensitivity for which she is renowned. The listener can enjoy the technical purity of each presentation, or hear as a novice the melodies without any analysis whatsoever.

Ms. Pines ex-Soldat Guarnarius attracts the listeners attention immediately. Pitch is pure and clear, and the richness of the instrument supporting each note envelops the listener. While not a word is recorded, the expression is of singing. Summertime is especially poignant, bringing a picture to mind of the joy of each new birth.

Rachel Barton Pine brings to music lovers another touching and enchanting experience; she invites the audience to feel her love for her new daughter through some of the most beautiful music known to the world.
