A lovelorn song from Die schone Mullerin forms the basis of a set of variations by Schubert, and reflective songs without words by Poulenc and Barber offer mellifluous contrast with the dancing energy of Bartok, Messiaen and Poulenc.

There are some nice touches in Walker and Baillieu's performance of the Poulenc sonata. In 1927, Poulenc wrote a Vocalise-Etude that he later contributed to a ten-volume set published by Leduc. It is a strong piece loaded with romantic drama. The first of Messiaen's Sight Singing Exercises (1934) could well be one of the folk songs from the Bartok-Arma suite that comes next - it's that direct and simple. These form a set of five pieces that runs about nine minutes. I like the way he soars when the writing in the Barber Canzone goes up high. The effortless playing suits this piece. Nevertheless, the performance has some captivating touches. Walker is particularly fine when he wants to play very softly. James Baillieu impresses me just as much as Walker. Together or apart, I'd gladly hear them again.
