American Record Guide, July/August 2013
The young British clarinetist Peter Cigleris is known for his study of early clarinets. Here he joins Australian pianist Antony Gray for a set of neo-romantic and neo-Impressionist works for clarinet and piano by British composers. The program consists of the the John Ireland Fantasy- Sonata (1943), the Cecil Armstrong Gibbs Three Pieces (1950), the William Alwyn Sonata (1962), the Clive Jenkins Five Pieces (2003), and two works by Australian-born John Carmichael: Fetes Champetres (Country Festivals) and Aria and Finale. Cigleris offers a creamy legato and heartfelt phrasing. On one hand, a clear low register, and nice color changes. Gray is a sensitive and assured keyboardist who supplies the special hues and feeling that the scores require.
