Performers Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Licht und Liebe features Schubert's vocal duets, trios and quartets - works that reveal the full variety of his creative impulses. Composed for the famous 'Schubertiads' - the composer's intimate gatherings of friends - they were sometimes written in dialogue and sometimes in unison; they were at times close to opera, or to Singspiel scenes or choral music. These delightful vocal ensembles, performed here by Marlis Petersen, Anke Vondung, Werner Güra and Konrad Jarnot, display a rare combination of skill, taste and compositional freedom that offers a special and immediate appeal for today's listener.

Gramophone Magazine, June 2013
Solemn, saucy or blithe, this is essentially convivial music, to be enjoyed in company, with a glass at hand...Berner and his regular vocal team are well-nigh ideal advocates. The four singers muster an impressive body of tone...The solo songs come off equally well.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
The program is called "Licht und Liebe" based on the duet of that title that proclaims "Love is a sweet light". It's a curious and delightful collection. Each singer has at least one solo song, and they all sing them splendidly. Their voices blend very well and the balances are just right. The performance is enhanced by a wonderful sounding R÷nisch fortepiano that Berner plays with elegant phrasing. Individually these are among the best lieder singers of our time, and Berner consistently produces exemplary results. Already I have returned to it many times and each time my delight has increased. Notes, texts, and translations.
