Tenebrae is the special form assumed by the office of Matins for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. The present recording is filled out with additional vocal and instrumental music. Couperin's Magnificat and Motet for Easter Day were written for the Chapel Royal at Versailles. Both are for two solo voices with continuo. Violist Susanne Heinrich is heard in two works by Marin Marais (1656-1728) with continuo. The 'Tombeau for Sainte-Colombe' appeared in Marais's second volume of pieces for the viol (1701). It commemorates the celebrated The other work is a lively and elegant Chaconne in A from the fifth volume (1725). The remaining work on the program is an unaccompanied Prelude in E minor for viol by Sainte-Colombe le Fils (c1660-1710). The younger Sainte-Colombe lived in Edinburgh. Six of his suites for viol are preserved in a 300-page manuscript collection in the Durham Cathedral library. It was compiled by Phillip Falle, a canon of Durham Cathedral and keen amateur violist.
