Notes & Reviews:
Michael Tilson Thomas leads the GRAMMY® award-winning San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Symphony Chorus in an all-new recording of Beethoven's monumental Symphony No.9. From its stormy opening to the towering fourth movement, Beethoven's final and perhaps greatest symphony is also one of the most universally loved works in all of classical music. The album features soprano Erin Wall, mezzo-soprano Kendall Gladen, tenor William Burden and bass-baritone Nathan Berg. Beethoven's ninth is the latest addition to the San Francisco Symphony's catalog of Beethoven recordings and is offered as a premium audio hybrid SACD.
American Record Guide, September/October 2013
This fine performance comes from June 2012 concerts in Davies Hall in San Francisco. Mr Thomas adopts good tempos, quick enough for excitement, broad enough for strength and depth. The soloists are also very good. The whole symphony has the feel of a concert. It's an exciting, compelling performance with vivid sonics.
BBC Music Magazine, August 2013
This is a spacious account, with an expansive and lovely slow movement, and a rapturous conclusion.
Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
Tilson Thomas tackles the [Finale's] recitatives with a mix of spontaneity and fine tailoring, and lets the ensuing melody take its sublime course...the overall impression is of a performance perfectly sound in its reasoning, with orchestra, chorus and soloists well prepared and alert to their expressive and technical responsibilities, but without the visionary qualities to make it a front-runner.
