Notes & Reviews:
Since they met at a summer music camp in Switzerland in 2001, violinist Rosanne Philippens and pianist Yuri van Nieuwkerk have been working together as a duo. They were awarded the Netherlands Programming Foundation Duo Prize at the National Violin Competition, as well as the Het Debuut at the latest Vriendenkrans/het Debuut. On this new recording, Philippens and van Nieuwkerk pay homage not just to Bartók and Ravel, but to what they call "the unbounded world of music," and their eclectic influences such as Radiohead, Brad Mehldau and Indonesian gamelan.

The cross-fertilisation certainly produces a pungent programme, played with terrific spirit...These two musicians work instinctively together, knowing just when to assert their pre-eminence and how to respond to one another's interpretative ideas.

This is the debut CD by the duo of Rosanne Philippens and Yuri van Nieuwkerk. Philippens won first prize at the National Violin Competition in the Netherlands. Philippens seems to have a soloist's temperament, and her readings of the works collected here are very energetic. Her Bartok Rhapsody 2 is the best I have heard since Lara St John's superb recording. Philippens plays a violin made ca 1750 by Michelangelo Bergonzi.
