Baroque master Telemann set the St. Luke Passion in 11 different versions. He did so because he composed for 5 of Hamburg's principal churches and had the task of setting the passion narrative from the Gospel of Luke in alternation with those in Matthew, Mark, and John at regular year intervals. He did not want to repeat himself in this performance series.

Telemann's music for this fascinating composite is up to his best standards, balancing dramatic and lyrical effects in generous profusion. This work's debut recording is first-rate on all counts. They are admirable: Klose is an Evangelist in the best tradition, Hilz is a Jesus on the Fischer-Dieskau model, and Spoglis dispatches his dramatic roles with real theatrical and vocal flair. The chorus sings beautifully, and the orchestra is polished.
