Notes & Reviews:

Since the establishment of the Molinari Quartet in 1997, Schafer's quartets have been prominently featured. Each individual quartet on this disc is played as if it were a single movement in a longer quartet, giving it a cyclic form. The Molinari Quartet is known for performing 20th and 21st century works and commissioning new works.

BBC Music Magazine, November 2013
The Montreal-based Molinari Quartet respond to [Schafer's] exquisitely sensitised, idiomatic string writing with rich and engaging performances...Schafer's music offers a depth of field and textural scope that reaches far beyond the confines of the string quartet.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
R Murray Schafer (b. 1933) is a Canadian composer with a strong feeling for description and a depth of inspiration that is impressive. This album contains his latest five string quartets, including a recording of No. 8 that was previously released in 2003. The Molinari has also recorded Quartets 1-7 on ATMA 2188. These are remarkably dramatic works. Most of them contain moments of non-quartet sounds. 9 has a quotation from Quartet 8 sung by a child, and other moments in that work are accompanied by the recorded laughter of children. Quartet 10, Winter Birds, contains a short narration by the composer, just before the end. Quartet 11 has an Aeolian harp to help bring it to a close. And Quartet 8 includes a second string quartet taped to help produce echo effects in the course of the second movement. As you may judge, these are pieces of great dramatic character. This composer is most satisfying to this listener. The Molinari plays with total involvement, and the recording is resonant and clear.
