Notes & Reviews:

Ondine proudly presents the first CD with works by German composer Jorg Widmann (born 1973) only. This release features his Violin Concerto (2007), Insel der Sirenen for Violin and 19 Strings (1997) and Antiphon for Orchestral Groups (2007-08).

The Guardian, 23rd May 2013
Tetzlaff's account is so astonishingly vivid and secure that Widmann's impressive work at least has to share the spotlight with its dedicatee...Tetzlaff makes every second matter; one is carried along on the bleak journey Widmann invents.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2013
In Christian Tetzlaff, Daniel Harding and the Swedish RSO, Widmann has found suitably uncompromising interpreters, and the recordings are as unvarnished and wide in perspective as the music itself demands.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Island of the Sirens, from 1997, comes first. Scored for solo violin and 19 strings. Antiphon, from 2008, brings the full orchestra to bear on making a bigger racket. It begins with a trumpet fanfare that sounds like the opening of Stravinsky's Agon put through an egg-beater. Next comes a thunderous drumming that might be five or ten score empty oil barrels tumbling off a freight train. Finally, there's the 29-minute single-movement Violin Concerto (2007). Here Widmann adopts a Bergian expressionist mode that gives the soloist more songlike lines. There are, it's true, some inventive, even fascinating sounds, among all these pyrotechnics, and some affecting moments, too. Certainly this concerto is vastly more communicative.

BBC Music Magazine, December 2013
Widmann's Violin Concerto will appeal to those who like Berg's. Tetzlaff's performance is outstanding...An impressive collection.
