Notes & Reviews:

With the phrase "Andrés Segovia Archive," this album refers specifically to the collection of some three or four-dozen pieces recovered by Angelo Gilardino on May 7, 2001 at Segovia's home in Spain. These pieces were dedicated to Segovia or commissioned by him, involving composers from eight countries. Edizione Musicale Bèrben subsequently published them as "The Segovia Archive Series." Roberto Moronn Pérez researched these newly recovered works and found some pieces had never been recorded, and those that had were handicapped by poor visibility in the marketplace and limited distribution. This realization sparked the thought that here was an opportunity: a series of recordings, organized around the nationalities of the composers. The Spanish composers recorded here are the first in the series, to be followed by an album of the French composers.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
This music, inspired by Segovia, fits the character of his favorites. All are tonal, all Spanish in flavor. One can be forgiven for hearing echoes of the familiar, Moreno Torroba most of all, since they all arise from a common source. Every one of these works is a worthy addition to the repertory. Vicente Arregui wrote five lyric pieces for Segovia towards the end of his life, in the mid- 20s. Thus his music predates Moreno Torroba's - or perhaps more accurately, prefigures. Their works certainly are similar. Gaspar Cassado was best known as a cellist, and he was a long-time friend of Segovia. Indeed, he transcribed one of Boccherini's cello concertos (original in G, if I'm not mistaken) for Segovia - a delightful transcription I haven't heard anyone perform in ages. Padre Donostia (a Capuchin monk, whose given name was Jose Antonio de San Sebastian) was a Basque, and 'Errimina' means nostalgia in Euskara, the Basque language. Gilardino changed the key and rearranged it formally, and what is performed here conveys the appropriate sense of longing. Jaume Pahissa, another Catalan, writes in a style that recalls Mompou and perhaps Emilio Pujol. His Three Pieces of Remembrance were written for and dedicated to Segovia in 1939. Roberto Morron Perez has an established career, mostly in Europe. He has degrees in musicology and collaborated with Gilardino in the publication of these and other works from the Segovia Archives. He is a very fine player, with a beautiful and wide-ranging tone and no apparent technical difficulties. His performance here is exemplary, dramatic where needed without ever overplaying. His performance is every bit as fine as Masters. Pahissa and four of the works by Arregui, so I have no hesitation in recommending both. Exciting discoveries await.
