Notes & Reviews:

The piano works of American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes represent a remarkable musical achievement. Griffes was active as a composer for little more than twelve years. Nevertheless, he produced pieces of great maturity that are both concise and extraordinarily powerful, showing the contemporary European influences to which he was exposed but also demonstrating a highly individual compositional voice. Roman Sketches, his most famous work, includes "The White Peacock" - an acknowledged Impressionist masterpiece - while the final movement, "Clouds," heralds the language of modernism. Almost all of Griffes's piano music is present here, played by his compatriot Garrick Ohlsson, who here applies the full force of his interpretive and technical prowess.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Listeners interested in an image of American composition in the early years of the 20th Century beyond the incomplete picture of Ives on the one hand and Amy Beach on the other will do well to consult this approachable and wellpackaged record. Garrick Ohlsson presents selections by Charles Tomlinson Griffes, an important American composer who lived from 1884 to 1920. After the obligatory period studying music in Europe, Griffes returned to the US and gradually developed a reputation as an original composer with an expansive sense of tonality and a gift for melody. Ohlsson's awesome technique and intelligent musical approach serve this music well. His tone is broad, his tempo choices are superb, and he brings to the music an appreciative. his tempo choices are superb, and he brings to the music an appreciative. The informative and well written liner notes are by Stephen Siek.
