Notes & Reviews:

2013 will mark the 600th anniversary of the birth of Saint Catherine of Bologna (1413). La Reverdie have discovered the repertory of laude sung by the Saint and her sisters and have placed it in its original context. The skillful combination of rich and varied instrumental sonorities together with crystal clear feminine vocality perfectly conveys the simple freshness and arcane fascination of this unexplored repertory.

Notes & Reviews:

Recording information: Convento di S. Maria, Bigorio (CH) (08/29/2010-09/01/2010).

Reviews

Humbly I Sing Psalms
Intermittently joyous and contemplative, always engaging. This is an interesting concept. An ensemble well known to devotees of early music, La Reverdie has proceeded from a skeletal compositional template in devising this compendium, a process described at some length in the accompanying essay. The result can be deemed a success. The 17 tracks (plus 2 readings) feature the distinguished musicianship of these 5 women who sing and provide instrumental support within a variety of permutations. The liner notes and packaging are reflective of Arcana’s exacting standards. The sound pickup while a touch over reverberant is nonetheless clean and adequately transparent. Sample tracks 4; 8; 12 and 17 for a good representation of what has been achieved here.
