Notes & Reviews:

The pieces in this collection span a considerable stretch of Glinka's life and includes rarely recorded chamber music. These works smell of chic 19th century salons, written in brilliant divertimento-style, for a variety of instruments performed here by the Bolshoi Theatre Soloists.

Expedition Audio Recommended
These Glinka compositions come from an interesting time when Russia's musical identity was soon to blossom... The sample provided with this recommendation is the opening five minutes or so of the Divertimento on Themes from Bellini's La sonnambula... Elegant, graceful, and subtlety evocative of the bel canto spirit, by listening to it you can glean a pretty accurate impression of what this Brilliant Classics CD has to offer. ... read more ...

The Divertimento Brilliante on Themes from Bellini's Sonnambula (1832) is scored for piano, string quartet, and double bass. Its Larghetto introduction and four sections blend the Italian melodic style of Bellini with early German romanticism. The Serenade on Themes from Donizetti's Anna Bolena (1832) is scored for piano, harp, bassoon, horn, viola, cello, and double bass - an ensemble that emphasizes instruments in the middle and low registers. The work has an introduction and six following sections. The idea of piano and harp playing similar parts at different times makes for interesting variety and coloring. Horn and bassoon played together supply some interesting hues of their own, and each later takes an effective solo turn. The Allegro Moderato is beautifully scored for the viola, with much of it in the meat of the instrument's register. The piano writing is in good balance with the soloist, meaning this is real chamber music. Glinka composed his youthful Variations on a Theme by Mozart for harp (1827) for the daughter of a family he met when he was 18. It is the second of two works he wrote based on Papageno's glockenspiel tune. The theme emerges in stately fashion, and the variations are clearly defined and engaging. The Nocturne (1828), also for harp, grew from the influence of John Field. The Bolshoi Theater Soloists are splendid. The recording is fine.

This collection of Mikhail Glinka's youthful chamber music is a lot of pleasant fun...If you want to try an hour of diverting early-romantic chamber music, you can do a lot worse.
