Notes & Reviews:

This release includes three world premier recordings of spiritual cantatas based on biblical texts or scenes by composer Rene de Bousset. The title of the CD refers to the drowning of Pharaoh and his army in pursuit of the people of Moses, De Bousset vividly and brilliantly painting these dramatic events.

To those may now be added this selection of four spiritual cantatas by RenT Drouard de Bousset (1703-60). Three of the selections come from his first collection, published in 1739. Two of these are paraphrases of Psalms 83 and 147 and the most effective work on this release is Le Naufrage de Pharaon (Pharaoh's Shipwreck), which describes in vivid musical detail the destruction of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea from the Israelite perspective. Bernhard Hansky (baritone) has a very dramatic voice and effectively handles the intricacies of Bousset's melodies and ornamentation. The two psalm paraphrases and the cantata Abraham, from Bousset's second collection (1740), are sung by Michiko Takahashi (soprano), who has a pleasant voice. The instrumentalists of Le Tendre Amour are supportive. I will acknowledge that the air for solo soprano, flute, and theorbo from Abraham, 'Sans demander quel est ton crime' (Without asking what is your crime), with its lower tessitura, is exquisitely beautiful. The three cantatas from the first collection, texts, translations, and music are available in a thesis by Felicity Smith, easily found on the web. For Abraham, you'll just have to imagine the story of Abraham and Isaac.

One can only be grateful that Le Tendre Amour has brought the oeuvre of de Bousset to our attention. the performances are in every way outstanding. These cantatas are very well-written...Michiko Takahashi has a very fine and clear voice, and shows her full mastery of the style of the French baroque.
