Notes & Reviews:
The story is based on centuries old legends, glorifying the triumph over evil and tyrannical powers. Rimsky, the genius of orchestration, vividly paints the evil in dark and chromatic colors, achieving stark contrasts in characterization. This recording features five acclaimed soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Kaschei is the 12th of Rimsky's 15 operas. Storm Knight the latent revolutionary forces. Kaschei is better known from his appearance in Stravinsky's ballet, The Firebird (1910). Rimsky has assigned the role to a tenor, and a romantic-sounding one at that. More attractive is the rich voiced mezzo of Terentieva. Which leaves Verestnikov to uphold the honor of Russian baritones, which he does to fine effect. The 'Snow Storm Chorus' is a particular delight, thrillingly performed. The orchestra plays with great character and beauty.
