Notes & Reviews:

The English mezzo-soprano made her debut in 1956 as Miss Roza in The Secret and is considered an outstanding singing actress, widely admired or her dramatic intensity, as seen in her famous portrayal as Dido in Les Troyens. She enjoyed an extensive operatic career, especially in early Italian opera and the works of Benjamin Britten where her enormous range was fully displayed. As a concert performer, she is noted for her intimate interpretations of Gustav Mahler as well as Edward Elgar. Complete emotional identification with her roles and a rich, expressive, and flexible voice enabled Baker to excel in florid as well as dramatic music.

She made an equally strong impact on audiences in the concert hall; among her most notable achievements is singing 'The Angel' in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius with Sir John Barbirolli in 1964. Dame Janet Baker became a favorite for notable conductors, bringing to each performance her unique interpretation, musical insight, and rich tone that could not be forgotten.

EMI is fortunate that it was able to capture so much of her artistic legacy and be able to bring it to audiences through a new medium. Included are performances of Monteverdi and Scarlatti with Leppard, two concerts of duets with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and recordings of English and French songs. This anniversary collection is a fitting tribute to a remarkable talent who will soon be celebrating her 80th birthday.

The Arts Desk, 2nd November 2013
How many artists are capable of tackling such a wide range of composers with such consistent generosity and musical intelligence?...an amazing bargain. Sound quality is consistently good.
