Notes & Reviews:

As Mendelssohn's successor of the Berlin Cathedral, Nicoli composed the Mass in D major, a sacred work well worth discovering and an important contribution to 19th century church music. Consono presents several other choral works which with their varied scorings show the diversity of Nicolai's sacred compositions.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Nicolai, born in 1810, the same year as Chopin and Schumann and only one year later than Mendelssohn, is known almost entirely for his comic opera Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor. He also, though, composed a body of sacred works, many influenced by a stay in Italy. His Mass was composed around the consecration of Poznan Cathedral in 1832 and revised in 1844. The Mass is accompanied by orchestra, while the shorter pieces are a cappella or accompanied by piano or organ; two ('Pater Noster', 'Ecce enim Desu') make effective use of polychoral style and recall the old Venetian practice. Jers, his soloists, choir, and orchestra, are all top notch. If this repertory interests you, you will enjoy this. The polychoral pieces are particularly nice and would make a fine addition to either service or concert.
