Notes & Reviews:

"... flawless, exciting ... we have music that unfolds comfortably, but there's enough to arouse curiosity without scaring anyone off. It will not alienate stodgy blue-hair types, but it will still satisfy those who crave creative new music." Thus has American Record Guide responded to the music of New York-based composer Sean Hickey, who reappears with new, engaging, and beautifully crafted concertos in his premiere Delos recording. Renowned cellist Dmitry Kouzov and vaunted clarinet virtuoso Alexander Fiterstein shine with St. Petersburg orchestras under Maestro Vladimir Lande.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Sean Hickey (b. 1970) usually appears on Naxos records, since he is the National Sales and Business Manager of that company. It is nice to find him appearing elsewhere; it seems to say something for his compositional appeal. These two concertos are lively, attractive works in an outgoing, highly listenable style, scored with sensitivity and exciting to listen to. Both soloists are highly competent, as are the orchestras behind them. The concertos were composed in 2008 (cello) and 2006 (clarinet). There are some extra-musical elements mentioned by the composer in his excellent liner notes. The slow movement of the cello concerto refers to the war in Iraq, and the finale of the clarinet concerto quotes a variety of Scottish melodies. Variety and warm emotions pervade this music.

Freshing New Voice
So much contemporary music lacks soul or even incipient emotional content. Its a matter of all head and no heart. This is hardly the case with the concertos featured on this disc. Composer Sean Hickey has fashioned two very attractive works which fully and imaginatively showcase the myriad expressive capabilities of these two most lyrical of instruments. The writing is eloquent, sophisticated and well organized. Those wary of the current music scene will find this disc quite accessible. The playing by all involved is of a consistently high caliber. The recorded sound is detailed, rich and three dimensional. The liner notes by the composer are lucid and illuminating. Still skeptical? Sample track #2 (2nd movement of the Cello Concerto) and track #6 (3rd movement of the Clarinet Concerto).
