Notes & Reviews:

Rovshan Mamedkuliev was first prize-winner at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 2012, and now stands as one of the world's most exciting young instrumentalists. He has constructed a program with several themes. Iberian music is represented by Falla, Albéniz and Turina, and by two of the titans of guitar playing, Miguel Llobet and Francisco Tárrega. He also includes music by his Azerbaijani compatriot, Fikret Amirov, whose folkloric-influenced music is another thematic link. The kaleidoscopic Just How Funky Are You by Andrew York and Leo Brouwer's An Ideaexplore the guitar's contemporary vitality.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Mr Mamedkuliev was the winner of the 2012 GFA Competition. This CD is part of his prize. Falla's dance from La Vida Breve is well known to guitarists in Pujol's two-guitar transcription, which itself is quite demanding. For one guitar, it is amazing. Fikrit Amirov is a fellow Azerbijani, a composer active during the Soviet years. They are quite conservative, strongly influenced by folk music, and they sound quite guitaristic. Well, well. Two performances of Llobet's Variations on a Theme by Sor in as many issues. Mamedkuliev picks the right tempo for the Albeniz and has a nice rasgueado for the Turina. In the passacaglia An Idea written for Eli Kassner, the distinguished Canadian guitar professor. It's hauntingly beautiful, a very soft, subtle work; and Mamedkuliev weaves magic with it. Saving the best for last: Castelnuovo- Tedesco's Capriccio Diabolico is given what is simply the most beautiful performance of this monumental work I've ever heard. Tone is exquisite, phrasing memorable, pacing inexorable, carrying the listener to its massive climax. I look forward to more from this talented player.
