Performer Composers

Notes & Reviews:

Only a few compositions by Firminus Caron (ca.1440 - ca.1475) have outlasted the centuries. These three CDs represent almost all of his existing compositions (including five masses). Along with Ockeghem and Busnois, he was named as one of the leading composers of his time by renowned Flemish composer and music theorist Johannes Tinctoris.

American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Firminus Caron (c.1440-c.1475) is a fascinating composer. His music was respected by his contemporaries, to the point that the theorist, Johannes Tinctoris, named him alongside Ockeghem as "one of the particularly outstanding composers". This collection containing his five extant cantus-firmus masses, three based on chant ('Jesu autem', 'Clemens et benigna', and 'Sanguis sanctorum') and two based on secular models (one on Caron's own chanson 'Accueilly m'a la belle' and one on the ubiquitous 'Homme armT'), along with a selection of seven chansons, offers an engaging and enlightening introduction to the works of this very creative composer. Really serious collectors may have the earlier version of the masses on 'L'homme armT' and 'Accueilly m'a la belle' on ORF Edition Alte Musik 3057 by these same performers. For this new collection, these were rerecorded, based on new editions of the music by Jaap van Benthem, whose very legible hand-written scores are included as a PDF supplement on the first disc along with complete texts and translations. The five singers of The Sound and The Fury are clearly modeled on the Hilliard Ensemble, especially since Hilliard alumnus John Potter is one of the two tenors. This set is clearly an important addition to the discography of 15th Century music and a must for any serious collector.
