Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, July/August 2014
This contains two discs with the same program. The first has Fidelity Mastering, the second Mobility Mastering. According to the notes the first is intended for high fidelity audio systems, the second for computers, nomad, and car sound systems. The package delivers both with no additional charge for the second disc. Beethoven's Sonata 21, dedicated to Count Waldstein, shows the French pianist in fine form. His playing is lightly pedaled, clean, and appropriately driven in the opening Allegro con brio. Liszt's 'Valle d'Obermann' from Annees de Pelerinage, and the transcription of Wagner's Tannhauser Overture combine virtuosity with expressive elements. Busoni's Adagio in A minor is taken from the organ Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C by Bach. It is brief, has a quiet beauty, and closes the program in sharp contrast to the storms that have preceded it. The multi-language notes are good.

  • Odyssey was conceived as a triptych, with the works chosen because of their evocations of Romanticism's major themes.
  • Pianist Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas, noted for his sonorous piano sound and assured manner, has recorded several critcally acclaimed albums for Fondamenta.
  • Booklet notes in French and English.
