Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, November/December 2013
This program surveys the wind output of prolific Czech pianist-organist-cellist-composer Petr Eben (1929-2007), whose music is well worth hearing. His Opus 1 (1950) oboe sonata is here, and his Opus 2 is a mass, written at some risk when Czechoslovakia was beginning to persecute people of any religion. The latest work is Appello for oboe and piano from 1995, commissioned for the 1996 Prague Spring Festival. There are also works for oboe and harp, wind quintet, and a short trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano. The quintet was recorded in the United States, the rest in a studio of Czech Radio. The cover is a detail from a cityscape of Prague painted by the oboist. The notes and biographies (all in English) cover 15 pages. This disc is recommended, and not just to oboists.
