Notes & Reviews:

New Expressive Trios by the Graun Brothers extraordinary compositional quality is again the hallmark of the Graun trios on our third release from Dresden library holdings - once again performed by members of Les Amis de Philippe. These works are virtuosic and passionate, vibrant and poetic, and full of melodic nobility in their slow movements.

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
The program includes 4 of their 136 extant trios. Two of them are in A, the others in B-flat and B, and each consists of three movements. They call for two solo instruments, played here by violin and viola, and keyboard. The use of hammerflngel (piano) instead of harpsichord gives the trios a decidedly "classical" sound. Having the keyboard often join the other melodic voices seems to liberate it from its usual harmonic role as a continuo instrument; and this, too, contributes to the overall Gallant style of these pieces. The solo parts demand technical mastery, but also delicate control over tone color, which Anne Schumann (violin) and Eva Salonen (viola) achieve with grace.
