Notes & Reviews:

MusicWeb International, September 2013
The alto Sibylle Kamphues offers compelling performances [of the two song-cycles]. The artists are to be commended for championing Schnabel's work...There is no doubt that there are some good things here. Well worth exploring.

On 2 new CDs we are presenting more music by Schnabel, who is a legend as a pianist but whose achievements as a composer have only recently been recognized. He always followed the developments in new music with interest and was familiar with Schönberg's oeuvre long before it gained renown.

American Record Guide, January/February 2014
I grew up with his structurally impeccable, gorgeously expressive Beethoven recordings. There is a great deal to explore on these two discs, which are part of a CPO Schnabel series. Gradually the program moves into more modern territory. Indeed, one can hear the transition from romanticism to modernism clearly in these works. The finale is a set of cheerfully nostalgic waltzes; Schnabel, like Ravel in this period, seems to be using the form to celebrate a quickly passing era. The massive, chromatic Piano Quintet from 1915 is in full of fascinating touches, performed with fervid commitment by Sybylle Kamphues and the Pellegrini Quartet. The Piano Sonata from 1923 is even more tonally unmoored. Pianist Irmela Roelcke, a longstanding Schnabel champion, has a formidable assignment in this taxing program and comes through splendidly, displaying a lyrical touch and warm tone in the songs and Fantasy Pieces and a bold sonority in the more modern solo works. These qualities are enhanced by the warm, spacious recording.
