Notes & Reviews:
Predictably an excellent disc by Gramophone, Claudio Abbado's wonderful compilation of Verdi Overtures and Preludes was one of his most illustrious CDs with the Berlin Philharmonic during his tenure as Musical Director there in the 1990s.
It includes Sinfonie from La forza del destino, Luisa Miller and Nabucco, Preludes from Aida, La Traviata and Don Carlos, and the ballet music from Macbeth.
On paper the anthology looks a bit strange, in practice it speaks volumes, as has frequently been the case with Abbado, a man who throughout his career has let the music do the speaking.

This is music-making of the keenest vitality and suppleness of movement, finely attuned to the characters in question. The Berlin strings quiver and burn for their conductor.
