This is Garry Walker's third CD for Toccata Classics after two well-received releases of Havergal Brian works with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. On this recording he explores Matthew Taylor's Viola Concerto, a work that "reinforced his status among the most significant living composers for string quartets" (International Record Review).

Matthew Taylor, born in 1964, is a British composer who studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. He's written several concertos and larger orchestral works and seven string quartets, among other things. Both these pieces are big, serious works. His intelligence is apparent, and it's clear that he writes to challenge an audience without offending it. The performances are commendable.
