Notes & Reviews:

The joys of Jean-Marie Leclair's Violin Sonatas Op. 2, published in 1728, five years after his first book of sonatas, can be found in the beauty of their melodic invention, and their expressive and surprising harmonies. Leclair takes us on unexpected journeys of landscape and scenery in his slow movements and excites with Italian energy and fire in the fast. Adrian Butterfield's three Naxos volumes of Leclair's Violin Sonatas, Op. 1 were acclaimed as being "shaped by exquisite phrasing and studded with lovely Italianate ornamentation... so much to savour". American Record Guide, March/April 2014
Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) was the first important French violinist. This book of 12 Violin Sonatas, Op. 2, is written so that some of them can be played on the flute, so melody prevails in most of them over technical display. They are light, refreshing works of four movements, and there is a good deal of variety in style. Adrian Butterfield and company play in a pleasing manner that does justice to the music. Just as Leclair found himself drawn to Italy, I would like to hear this music played by the likes of Fabio Biondi or Giuliano Carmignola, who might bring some southern fire to the proceedings.
