Notes & Reviews:
Mozart wrote a number of his concert and opera arias for the highly virtuoso voices of the legendary castrati. While castrati are now a relic of another era, these great works are brought to life again by coloratura stars like American soprano Kathleen Battle, who give readings of this repertoire that are as virtuosic as they are expressive. Part of EMI Classic's Red Line series, this recording presents the famous "Exsultate, jubilate," an 'opera scene' for church performance that is rich in joyful melody. Performed under the baton of André Previn, this recording of Mozart's concert arias offers a spectacular glimpse into a historically grounded vocal tradition.
