Notes & Reviews:
Johann Strauss II was deservedly known as the 'Waltz King', and his talent for writing captivating dance melodies was ideally suited to the sparkling world of operetta. Featuring a host of star performers such as Nicolai Gedda, Brigitte Fassbaender, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Rita Streich, Hermann Prey, and Grace Bumbry, this set includes some of Strauss's most popular and enduring masterpieces in the genre, as well as the lesser-known Simplicius, heard here in its acclaimed world premiere recording under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst.
- 10 CD set - includes the perennial favorite 'Die Fledermaus'
- Many of the performers in this set are intimately associated with this repertoire
- The live recording of Simplicius included in this set was its world premier recording

The best of the set by far in terms of performance is Die Fledermaus...It is wholly idiomatic, with the whole very distinguished cast seeming to enjoy themselves the whole time...Nicolai Gedda, Anneliese Rothenberger and Renate Holm all know exactly how to project music which can easily sound routine or exaggerated in other hands.
