Album Remarks & Appraisals:
Born in Japan and a resident of New York since 2001, Aya Nishina is a very special and a beautiful spirit whose work touches upon nature spirituality and the deepest human emotions. Five years in the making Flora is a brilliant suite of pieces for the human voice. At times layering hundreds of voices at the same time, the music is lush, orchestral and healing. Meticulously written, rehearsed, guided and recorded this is a fabulous debut CD by a brilliant composer who has worked with Ryuichi Sakamot, Greg Osby and many others.
American Record Guide, January/February 2014
Aya Nishina's music on her record Flora is all layered vocal textures. All of the voices are female, mostly pure and straight. Some pieces are performed by only one singer, who has recorded over herself for each part. The composer says in the liner notes that writing for the female voice inspires her, and this is clear in the general aesthetic of each piece. The record as a whole offers nice sounds.
